スペインが南米を征服した昔、そのまま北に進んだスペイン軍は、アパッチ族に撃退された。

アパッチ族には「族長」の概念が希薄で、リーダーに相当する人は、その場の雰囲気で何となく決まっていたから、 スペイン軍が「頭」とおぼしき人物を倒しても、相手の勢いは乱れなかったのだという。「頭」を倒しても、 すぐに別の誰かがその場所に座って部族を率いたから、アパッチ族は負けることがなかったのだと。

北米に移り住んだアメリカ人は、アパッチ族を撃退するのに、相手に「牛」を贈与した。

牛は貴重な財産で、財産をもらった「頭のない組織」には、組織のリーダーになることに、 財産という実利が発生するようになった。財産の取り分を巡って、アパッチ族には いざこざが発生するようになって、結果として「頭」が生まれたアパッチ族は、 軍隊が与しやすい相手となって、アメリカ大陸の主導権は、白人が奪うことになったんだという。
